Brad Zuchero, PhD
Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery
Brad launched his lab at Stanford in early 2017 in the Department of Neurosurgery. Brad has a longstanding interest in how cells in the brain interact to build a functional nervous system, regulate its function in adults, and how these interactions are perturbed in disease. Brad grew up in the woods of Pennsylvania, becoming interested in science at a young age with the encouragement of his teacher parents. He majored in biology at Vassar College, where he first fell in love with research. Brad did his Ph.D. work with Dr. Dyche Mullins at UCSF, and postdoctoral work with Dr. Ben Barres here at Stanford. Some of his best ideas have come while cycling, running, or hiking around Northern California.
Brad is excited to mentor students at any level on all aspects of being a scientist, including technical skills in the lab, developing research questions, career development, and life/work balance. Brad works closely with students and postdocs in his lab, including one-on-one meetings, weekly round table discussions and troubleshooting with the lab, weekly journal clubs where we discuss and critique current and classic papers in our field, and helping prepare for quarterly formal research talks with other labs on campus. Brad is also happy to serve on qualifying exam and/or thesis committees for students in Neurosciences, Biology, Developmental Biology, or others with an interest in cell biology or neurobiology.
Through the SoLID Mentorship program, Brad looks forward to engaging with students in all capacities- from being an informal mentor to grabbing a coffee and talking about anything at all.
